Windham ME Real Estate, Windham Area and Community Information

With great schools, low-crime rates, and four seasons of outdoor fun, it’s easy to see why Bloomberg Businessweek listed some Windham properties under the title “Best place to raise kids in Maine.”

Real Estate in Windham Has a Rich History

Nestled along the eastern shores of Sebago Lake just 30 minutes north of central Portland, this quiet New England town suffered its share of conflict in its early years. Fortifications were constructed in 1744 during the French and Indian Wars and early settlers often took shelter in the town’s stockade from attacks by the region’s indigenous inhabitants. However by the time of the American Revolutionary War, more than a dozen townsfolk from Windham ME homes were able to join George Washington’s Continental Army at Valley Forge. Following the construction of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal in 1832, Windham became a town of mills producing everything from food and textiles to wooden shingles and barrels. Local Oriental Powder Company mills helped supply a quarter of all the gunpowder used by the Union Army during the Civil War. After the construction of the transcontinental Roosevelt Trail (now U.S. Route 302), Windham properties became popular with vacationing motorists and Portland commuters who now own more than half of all Windham homes.

Campgrounds and outdoor nature reserves dot the landscape around Sebago Lake including the sandy beaches, woodland trails, and excellent fishing at the Sebago Lake State Park. In the nearby town of Gray, the Maine Wildlife Park is a great place to encounter moose or spot a black bear. And more than 500 acres of parks and nature preserves are located within the town of Windham including the serene Donnabeth Lippman Park and the popular swimming spot of Dundee Park near the town's center.
